Why the grams behind your knitwear matter more than you think

Different fibres carry different natural densities. Even if you knit the same garment, to the same measurements, on the same machine, the final weight can shift dramatically depending on the yarn.


Here’s the simple truth:

  • Cashmere is airy, lofty and surprisingly light.

  • Merino wool is springy and slightly heavier.

  • Cotton is a plant fibre, so it’s naturally denser.

  • Wool and Cashmere blends sit somewhere in between, depending on the ratio.


This is why a cotton jumper can feel noticeably heavier than a cashmere one, even when they’re cut to identical specs. It’s not a flaw, it’s physics.

Even within the same fibre category, weight can shift depending on how the yarn is built.

If two yarns are in the same price tier, then the heavier garment will always cost more to produce. Not because it’s “better”, but because it consumes more kilograms of yarn.


A few practical examples:

  • A heavy merino hoodie will cost more than a light merino tee, same fibre, different weight.

  • A dense cotton knit may be cheaper than a light cashmere knit, because cotton yarn is far cheaper per kg.

  • A cashmere jumper that feels feather‑light can still be expensive, because cashmere itself is costly, regardless of weight.


Weight doesn’t tell you everything about quality, but it tells you a great deal about cost.
