Easy Ways to Remove Static from Knitwear
Few things are more frustrating than putting on your favourite jumper only to find it clinging to your clothes, crackling as you move, or attracting lint and dust. While static is often associated with synthetic fabrics, even knitwear made from natural fibres such as cashmere, merino wool and cotton can occasionally develop static under the right conditions.
The good news is that static is usually easy to manage. Understanding what causes it can help you keep your knitwear comfortable, looking its best, and lasting longer.
Why Does Knitwear Become Static?
Static occurs when electrical charges build up on a fabric's surface. This is most common when there is friction between garments and the air is particularly dry.
Natural fibres generally produce less static than synthetic fibres because they can absorb more moisture from the air. However, even premium natural yarns can develop static during winter months, in centrally heated environments, or when layered with synthetic clothing.
Before blaming the knitwear itself, it is worth considering factors such as:
Low indoor humidity
Frequent rubbing against synthetic fabrics
Tumble drying
Extremely dry weather conditions
1. Use a Garment Steamer
One of the safest and most effective ways to remove static from natural fibre knitwear is light steaming.
The moisture released by the steamer helps dissipate the electrical charge while also refreshing the garment and reducing wrinkles.
This method is particularly suitable for:
Cashmere
Merino wool
Lambswool
Cotton knitwear
A gentle steam is often all that is needed to solve the problem.
2. Increase Humidity Indoors
Static thrives in dry environments.
If your home or office becomes very dry during colder months, consider using a humidifier. Increasing indoor humidity can significantly reduce static build up not only in knitwear but throughout your wardrobe.
This approach tackles the root cause rather than simply treating the symptom.
3. Avoid Excessive Contact with Synthetic Fabrics
Many static issues actually originate from neighbouring garments rather than the knitwear itself.
For example, a cashmere jumper worn under a polyester jacket may accumulate more static due to friction between the two fabrics.
Where possible:
Layer natural fibres with other natural fibres
Choose cotton shirts beneath knitwear
Avoid prolonged rubbing against polyester or acrylic materials
4. Lightly Mist the Garment
A very light mist of clean water can help neutralise static temporarily.
The key is moderation. The jumper should not become wet, only slightly dampened.
This quick fix is useful when heading out and needing an immediate solution.
5. Wash and Care for Knitwear Correctly
Proper care helps maintain the natural properties of the fibres.
For high quality natural yarns:
Use mild shampoo
Avoid harsh chemicals and direct sunlight
Follow the garment care instructions
Lay flat to dry whenever possible
Contrary to popular belief, using large amounts of fabric softener is not always the best option, particularly for luxury fibres such as cashmere. Maintaining fibre quality should be prioritised over temporary static reduction.
Does the Solution Differ Between Cashmere, Wool and Cotton?
In most cases, the same methods work across natural fibres. The differences are relatively small.
Cashmere responds particularly well to steaming and proper humidity.
Merino wool naturally resists static quite effectively.
Cotton rarely develops significant static unless the environment is extremely dry or the fabric is blended with synthetics.
As a result, there is usually no need for drastically different treatments. Good garment care and proper environmental conditions are often enough.

Quality Matters
High quality natural yarns tend to be more comfortable, breathable and less prone to static-related issues than lower-quality alternatives or heavily synthetic blends. The fibre selection, yarn quality and knitting construction all contribute to the final wearing experience.
