How to Tell Real Cashmere From Blends

Cashmere is loved for its softness, warmth and quiet luxury. But the market is full of blends, imitations and confusing labels. If you are a brand or buyer, knowing how to spot real cashmere protects both your product quality and your reputation.

Here is a simple, honest guide to help you tell the difference.

1. Look at the Surface

Real cashmere has a soft, even surface with a gentle natural bloom.

Real cashmere shows:

  • A smooth, slightly fluffy look

  • A soft halo that develops with wear

Blends often show:

  • A flat, dull surface

  • More loose fibres on day one

2. Feel the Warmth

Cashmere warms up almost instantly when you touch it.

Real cashmere feels:

  • Warm within seconds

  • Light but insulating

Blends feel:

  • Cooler at first touch

  • Heavy without extra warmth

3. Test the Stretch

Cashmere has natural elasticity.

Real cashmere:

  • Stretches gently

  • Returns to shape smoothly

Blends:

  • Feel stiff or overly springy

  • May not recover well

4. Watch the Pilling

All cashmere pills, but the pattern tells you a lot.

Real cashmere pills:

  • Slowly

  • In small, soft clusters

Blends pill:

  • Quickly

  • In large, hard balls

5. When in Doubt, Test the Fibre

For yarn or loose fibre, a burn test can help.

Real cashmere:

  • Smells like burnt hair

  • Turns to soft ash

Synthetics:

  • Melt into hard beads

  • Smell chemical

This is not for finished garments, but it is useful when checking yarn suppliers.

Not all blends are bad. Some are clearly labelled and offer good value. The issue is when blends are sold as pure cashmere. Transparency matters more than perfection.

The best protection is a supplier like CH Cashmere, who is open about fibre quality, yarn source and production standards. Real cashmere has a feel and behaviour that blends cannot fully imitate, but a trustworthy partner removes the guesswork.
