How to Store Cashmere for Summer: A Complete Guide to Avoid Moths and Odours

Cashmere is one of life’s quiet luxuries. Soft, breathable, and effortlessly elegant, it is the fibre people reach for when they want comfort without compromise. Yet even the finest cashmere can lose its magic if it is stored poorly. As summer approaches and knitwear retreats to the wardrobe, proper storage becomes essential and not optional.

At CH Cashmere, we work with premium fibres every day, and we see first hand how much difference the right care makes. This guide brings together expert knowledge, museum level conservation advice, and practical steps you can follow at home to keep your cashmere pristine until the cold returns.

Why Summer Storage Matters More Than You Think

Most cashmere damage happens not while wearing it, but while it is tucked away for months. Moths thrive in dark, undisturbed spaces, and humidity can flatten fibres or cause mildew. Even sunlight can weaken and fade colours over time.

Cashmere is a protein fibre, the same reason it feels so soft is the reason it needs protection. Moth larvae feed on keratin, and even tiny traces of body oils or perfume can attract them.

In short: how you store cashmere determines how long it lasts.

Step 1: Always Clean Before Storing

This is the golden rule. Never store cashmere that has been worn, even briefly. Invisible residues such as skin oils, perfume, and microscopic food particles are exactly what moth larvae seek out.

You can hand wash with a gentle wool detergent or take it to a trusted cleaner.

What matters most is that the garment is:

  • completely clean

  • thoroughly rinsed

  • dried flat and fully dry before storage

A “clean looking” jumper is not enough. Moths have better instincts than we do.

Step 2: Fold, Never Hang

Gravity is not a friend to knitwear. Hanging cashmere stretches the shoulders, distorts the body, and weakens the loops over time.

For long term storage, always fold your cashmere neatly. If you want to avoid creases, place a sheet of tissue paper between folds, a trick used by museum conservators.

Step 3: Choose the Right Storage Container

The container you choose is just as important as the garment itself.

The best options are:

  • Breathable cotton or linen bags: allow airflow and prevent moisture build‑up.

  • Cedar boxes: naturally repel moths and smell wonderful.

  • Lidded storage boxes: ideal for stacking and keeping dust away.

Avoid plastic dry cleaning bags and cardboard boxes. They trap moisture and can encourage mildew.

Step 4: Use Natural Moth Deterrents That Actually Work

Mothballs are effective but toxic, and their smell is notoriously difficult to remove.

Instead, choose natural repellents:

  • Cedar blocks or balls: refresh by sanding lightly once a year.

  • Lavender sachets: replace every six months.

  • Rosemary, thyme, or cloves: pleasant and effective.

These create an environment moths dislike without compromising the scent of your knitwear.

Step 5: Store in a Cool, Dry, Dark Place

Heat, humidity and sunlight are the enemies of cashmere. Store your folded garments in a cool, dry cupboard or drawer with good air circulation. Avoid basements, attics, or anywhere damp.

A simple rule: if you would not store fine tea or leather there, do not store cashmere there.

Step 6: Check Your Cashmere Every Few Months

Even with perfect storage, it is wise to check your garments every two to three months.

Look for:

  • small holes

  • loose fibres

  • signs of larvae

  • musty smells

Early detection prevents long‑term damage.

If You Find Moths: Act Quickly

If you discover any signs of moth activity:

  1. Remove all garments immediately.

  2. Freeze affected items in sealed bags for 72 hours.

  3. Wash everything, even pieces that look untouched.

  4. Vacuum the storage area thoroughly.

  5. Replace cedar or lavender with fresh pieces.

Cashmere can often be saved if treated promptly.

Cashmere is an investment, not just financially, but emotionally. The pieces you love most deserve care that honours their craftsmanship. At CH Cashmere, we believe that luxury should last, and proper summer storage is one of the simplest ways to protect your garments for years to come.

Whether you own a single cherished jumper or a full wardrobe of fine knitwear, these steps will keep your cashmere soft, fresh and beautifully preserved until the cold weather calls for it again.
