Tech Packs 101: What They Are and Why You Need Them for Customizing Your Garments

A tech pack is a document that contains all the technical specifications of a garment, such as measurements, materials, colours, stitching, labels, tags, and more. It is like a blueprint that guides the manufacturer on how to produce the garment according to the designer's vision and requirements.

A tech pack is important if you wish to customise a garment because it ensures that your design is accurately translated into the final product. Without a tech pack, you may encounter issues such as poor quality, incorrect sizing, wrong colours, delayed production, or increased cost. A tech pack helps you communicate clearly with the manufacturer and avoid any misunderstanding or errors.

Tech pack typically consists of several pages that cover different aspects of the garment, such as:

  • A cover page that shows the name of the product, the style number, the season, and the designer's contact information.

  • A sketch page that shows the front and back views of the garment, along with any details or features.

  • A measurement page that shows the size chart and the dimensions of each part of the garment.

  • A material page that shows the fabric type, weight, composition, colour code, and wash instruction.

  • A construction page that shows the stitching type, seam allowance, hem allowance, and any special techniques or finishes.

  • A label page that shows the placement and size of the brand logo, wash label, size label, and hang tag.

  • A packing page that shows the folding method, polybag size, carton size, and quantity per carton.

A tech pack may also include additional pages depending on the complexity of the garment or the specific needs of the designer or manufacturer.

Creating a tech pack may seem like a tedious task, but it is essential if you want to customise a garment and ensure its quality and consistency. A tech pack will save you time and money in the long run and help you achieve your desired outcome.
